The perichondrium located around the cartilage has many important and vital functions. The cartilage is a dynamic structure which remains in constant rigorous motion and highly prone to wear and tear. The perichondrium contains an outer layer of fibrous elastin which resists excessive outwards expansion of the cartilage. Also, a large number of nascent and dividing cartilagenous cells are located in the inner part of the perichondrium which help in growth, repair and wear and tear along with repair and maintenance of the cartilages.
