Swimming Pool On a certain hot summer's day. 203 people used the public swimming pool. The daily prices are $1.75 for children and $2.25 for adults. The receipts for admission totaled $372.75. How many children and how many adults swam at the public pool that day?​

Let the number of children in the pool be x

Let the number of adult in the pool be y

If  203 people used the public swimming pool, then;

x + y = 203

  • x = 203 - y .......... 1

Also,  if the daily prices are $1.75 for children and $2.25 for adults with the receipts for admission totaled $372.75, then;

1.75x + 2.25y = 372.75

175x + 225y = 37275

7x + 9y = 1,491

Substitute equation 1 into 2

7(203-y) + 9y = 1,491

1421- 7y + 9y = 1491

2y = 70

y = 35

Since x = 203 - y

x = 203 - 35

x = 168

Hence 168 children and 35 adults swam in the public pool
