Pepsin is a digestive enzyme that is produced by the walls of the stomach, being activated by gastric juice, and whose function is to break proteins down into simpler peptides (amino acids).

It only reacts in acidic medium. Therefore, the stomach also produces hydrochloric acid (HCl). When in contact with hydrochloric acid, pepsinogen (an "inactive" enzyme that is present in gastric juice) turns into pepsin, which is "active".
