The significance of the mask is that it covered the physical  identity of Jack who wore it. This shows us in reality how people take on different  personalities to hide their insecurities and innate desires.

Jack's painted mask changed him from a civilized English boy to  violent,irrational and unforgiving savage boy . He could not kill the pig before putting the mask but with the mask , he felt anonymous and  courageous to kill the pig.
