Mussolini and Hitler had the common idea of scapegoating and blind nationalism to gain power. Whilst stalin merely murdered and schemed his way to power. Their methods for maintaing power were similar. Mass repression, censorship, execution, war, mass extermination/starvation. However Stalin held on to power by acting on cold hard calculations rather than Hitler and Mussolini’s blind and lofty dreams of empires. Stalin recognised that empires and conventional war would become obsolete. He recognised the need for industrialisation and national unity. So unlike Hitler who United Germanic people by calling them German and killing the non-Germans. Stalin in contrast played deep seeded rivalries between groups in Russia against their own interests. He gave states territory knowing full well that another state would object he could then broker peace and they would have caved completely.
