It is caused by the combination of consuming too much food and exercising very little. Fast food candy, and soft drinks (highly processed foods) are often linked to childhood obesity.

Associated risks include:

High blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.
