Fossil formation
After the death of an animal, the body may be under the mud or rocks. As time goes on, the minerals in the soil takes over the organisms original material and hardens it into rock in a process called Mineralisation.
Mineralisation leads to the formation of fossils which are formed when dead decaying organic matter are subjected to pressure under rocks for years.
If the living thing is pressed into a rock and leaves an impression, we call what is left behind an external mold.
Trace fossil are formed when the external molds are filled with tiny pieces of rocks called sediments.
