This question requires a personal opinion as an answer concerning the claim by Amy Tan "the language spoken within the family does more to shape the way a child speaks than the language spoken by his or her peers." The following is an example of a personal opinion:

I do not agree with Tan's position that the language spoken within the family does more to shape the way a child speaks than the language spoken by his or her peers. I believe Tan herself is prove that such a thing is not true.

In "Mother Tongue" she mentions she uses different types of English depending on whom she is talking to. With her mother, she uses "broken" English, but with others, especially in formal environments, Tan uses grammatically loaded English.

To me, that proves that Tan was shaped by both her mother and her peers. So much so that she knows when to use what type of English, and she switches those types naturally.

The different uses of language
