The definition of a fraction is a part of a whole .
If a whole is divided into equal parts, these equal parts are called fractions.
Fractions are written like this :

Where
y = the number of total parts
x = the number of parts taken

Suppose your companion Danette has 32 pencils. Out of them, 8 pencils are red.
What fraction of the pencils is red?
Total number of pencils = 32 (denominator)
Number of red pencils = 8 (numerator)
So the fraction of red pencils is :
[tex]\boxed{\\\begin{minipage}{4cm}Danette's\:pencils \\ $\displaystyle\frac{8}{32} \\ \end{minipage}}[/tex]
If the numerator and denominator are divisible by the same number, then we can reduce the fraction :
[tex]\boxed{\\\begin{minipage}{4cm}Danette's\:pencils \\ $\displaystyle\frac{1}{4} $\\ \end{minipage}}[/tex]
