The expedition faced many challenges including supply stock, strategy, manpower, logistics, and more. It was more than what he was prepared for. That is why it ended in catastrophe. In order to organize and fund his army, he forced the wealthy to provide loans. He recruited people quickly and rashly. He got practically anyone he could get his hands on including Indians.  Santa's men were killed off from Indian attacks and a lack of proper supplies. Santa Anna kept going despite these fatal challenges.
