Explanation:

Once upon a time, in a faraway land-

Hold up. No. I don't like that.

A few years ago, across the hall from me, my mother died.

Just like that, boom, she was gone.

I was left alone with my father, who vowed to do everything in his power to protect me and give me the best of life. I was his little "Ella", a nickname off of the name I shared with my mother, Eleanor. Though I was only ten at the time, I understood his loneliness and made every effort to be a source of encouragement through the ups and downs of life.

We were inseparable. Father, Ella. Ella, Father. The servants adored me and worshipped the very ground Father trod upon. Life was good, and I saw no need for anything in the world to change.

Then came Stepmother. Father had told me she would come on the eve of my sixteenth birthday, and I did not know what to expect.

"She will be kind," he whispered to me as the clatter of horse's hooves on the stone announced her arrival.

I looped my arm through his, a frown tugging at the corners of my mouth. "She isn't Mum," I said under my breath. He put his finger under my chin and lifted my head so he could look into my eyes. I was taken aback to find the tears pooling in his own.

"I hope you understand that I am not trying to replace her. " He said softly. He ran his hand over my golden curls, so different than Mum's deep brown ones.

The carriage came to a stop and one of Father's footmen opened the door.

I stepped back in shock at the person who stepped out. She was tall with regal features. Her dark brown hair was coiled and cascaded down her back.

I knew those kind green eyes, and the way she gently stepped down.

"Mother?" I whispered.

Father was just as taken aback as I was.

"Eleanor?" his voice was barely audible.

"I'm back," She said, a cruel smile flitting across her face. My blood went cold at that foreign expression. Behind her emerged two girls with flawless beauty and waists too small to be healthy.

"She did some upgrades while she dies," One of them said with a voice like nails on a chalkboard. "But you wanted her back, did you not?

My heart stopped as Mum cupped my chin with her black-gloved hand.

"You are the girl in my memories, are you not? She said disdainfully. "Come along, you have work to do."

The other girl cackled. "Ella's a servant!"

"What?!" I exclaimed. "I am NOT!"

"Darling," Mother crooned. "I am weak and tired. Surely you don't mind helping your sweet, revived mother, now, do you?"

My will collapsed as I saw a flicker of the old mother in her eyes. "No, Mum," I sighed. "I don't mind at all."
