A body was found lying face up in a residence. The body had 4 incised wounds on the
trunk centered in the area around the heart and center of the abdomen. The wounds were
all about 1.2 inches wide and varied in depth from 4 inches to 6.5 inches. The temperature
in the residence was found to be 70° F by both a thermometer and the thermostat setting.
The body temperature was measured to be 70°. No rigor mortis was noted in the body.
Livor mortis was found on the back and remained dark when pressed. A wound
measuring 3 inches by 0.5 inches was found next to a yellow bruise on the eyebrow bone
area. Tissue bridges were found in 2 areas of this wound.
Write your report thoroughly addressing the following:
1. Approximate the PMI using the recorded body temperature due to algor mortis.
2. Approximate the PMI using the rigor mortis data and explain your reasoning.
3. Approximate the PMI using the livor mortis data and explain your reasoning.
4. Explain whether or not all data are consistent with each other. Explain any
inconsistencies.
5. Explain whether or not the body was moved and how you know.
6. Identify and explain any marks on the body and what they indicate, if anything.

Sagot :

If the body was found within a 12 hour period of it's demise, the Post-Mortem Interval (PMI) of the body due to Algor Mortis will be approximately 92°F.

What is Algor Mortis?

When a living warm blooded organism dies, the body temperature of such an organism will begin to cool of from it's normal temperature range until the temperature of such a body is equal to that of the environment in which it is found.

This cooling off of the body is called Algor Mortis. On the other hand, Rigor Mortis is the change that occurs to the cadaver where by the body becomes stiff because of chemical changes in the myofibrilis.

What is PMI?

It is to be noted that the time between when such an organism dies and when it is found is what is referred to as Post-Mortem Interval (PMI).

The post-mortem interval (PMI) would be calculated by subtracting the normal body temperature from the interior temperature of the cadaver when discovered, and then dividing the result by the rate of temperature drop per hour.

That is:

PMI = 98.6°F –  (temperature of cadaver) ÷ rate of temperature fall per hour)

Recall that the temperature of the Cadaver was given as 70°F, therefore,

Approximate PMI (Due to Algor Mortis) = 98.6 - 70 ÷ rate of fall per hour.

What is the Rate of Fall of Temperature Per hour?

Rate of fall of temperature per hour is given at a constant of approximately 1.5°F/hour during the first 12 hours. Assuming it was found after 12 hours, that mean the the temperature fell by:

1.5 X 12 = 10°F

Hence, Approximate PMI (Due to Algor Mortis) = 98.6 - 70 ÷ 10

= 91.6 or  PMI (Due to Algor Mortis) ≈  92°F. or 33°F.
