The purpose of the dreams in Act lV Scene l is to give an example of how Demetrius does not feel like what is happening is in reality and that maybe he is dreaming because the events seem so surreal as he states  "Are you sure that we are awake? It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream.”. I think the purpose of the dreams advances the plot, not add a theme, and they are how Demetrius interprets his reality. ( I think it's the last one better because it's more obvious).
