Chapter 1: All Aboard!

(1) Sally gripped her sister's hand as the train filled the small platform with clouds of steam and dust. The whistle was the loudest sound Sally had ever heard, and she wished she could put her hands over her ears. She looked down at her younger sister, Beth. The little girl was trying not to cry. Sally could see her lip quivering and the tears filling her eyes.

(2) "It'll be okay," she said, squeezing her hand. "It's going to be a wonderful adventure. Just think about how happy Father will be to see us!"

(3) "I don't remember what Father looks like," Beth whispered. "He's been gone a long time."

(4) “Come on," Sally said. "Let's find our seats."

(5) "All aboard!" shouted the conductor. "Non-stop from Omaha to Sacramento."

(6) Sally and Beth settled into the cushioned seats, their suitcases stashed under their chairs. Sally stared out the dusty window at the flat, sunbaked landscape. She wondered how different life would be in California. Their father had left them with their grandparents in Omaha while he traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. She took his last letter from her pocket and read it for the hundredth time.

Chapter 2: Welcome to California

(23) "Sally! Beth!" A familiar voice shouted their names. Sally turned to see her father striding down the platform toward them. He grinned as he scooped them both into a huge hug. "I've missed you so much," he said.

(24) They walked out of the station together into a street bustling with activity. They walked past storefronts and pushed through crowds of people. At the corner store, their father bought them each a cup of ice cream. Sally had never tasted anything so good.

(25) They walked for another few blocks and turned onto a side street lined with big houses. They stopped in front of a house painted the color of a summer sky.

(26) "Welcome home," said their father. Sally and Beth ran around the back of the house. Standing on the back porch, they could see the sea meeting the horizon.

(27) "It's beautiful here," whispered Beth. Sally nodded.

(28) "I think we're going to like California," she said with a grin.
