What is matter? That’s a good question. Matter is a physical substance that is comprised of various particles, occupies volume, and has inertia. We live off of matter; matter is what makes up everything of our surroundings, from oxygen to water to dirt. Matter comes in three primary states, which are solids, liquids, and gases. These states of matter are all interchangeable and we encounter them every day. An example of a solid would be a rock. A rock is considered matter because it has mass, and it takes up space. An example of a liquid would be soda. Soda is considered matter because it has mass (despite being a liquid), and it takes up space. There also is a twist to liquids, and that is the interesting fact that they can obtain the shape of the host. Liquids do not have definite shape, meaning that their shape can change in accordance to what shape the holder or container is. Gases are considered matter because they take up space, and they have inertia. An example of a gas would be water vapor. Matter is all around us; whether or not we realize it, we are probably in physical contact with it this moment!
