So you're thinking about buying a new bike or trying a new breakfast cereal? Every day you probably come across ads for these or other similar products. Out of all the ads you see, how do you decide which product to spend your hard-earned money on?

You do a little bit of evaluation first. You have been cautioned over and over again not to believe everything that you read, see, or hear. Now, it is time to put your critical thinking skills to work. Have you mastered the tools it takes to do a good job evaluating an ad?

Identify the purpose of an advertisement and its use of rhetorical modes.
Assess the relationship between the use of fallacies and the effectiveness of an advertisement.
Instructions:
Go through a magazine and select three advertisements for projects that interest you. Copy and paste the template below into the box provided and answer the questions for each ad you chose. You must choose one of each of the following for your ads:

What is an Advert?

This refers to the creation of awareness for a particular good or service through the use of the mass media so that people would purchase the product.

Some examples of an ad endorsement are:

  • Showing that a product like Dettol is trusted to deal with germs
  • Using bandwagon fallacy to say that a lot of people use a product happily and they cannot all be wrong.

Some examples of an ad condemnation are:

  • "A lot of people die every year due to cholera because they do not take care of themselves"
  • "Ignorance is a silent killer."

Some examples of condemning to endorse are:

  • "Your teeth would contain plaques if you do not make use of our Prey Toothpaste"
  • "Do you want your homes to always be dirty? Get Oma Washing Soap"

An ad can make use of either ethos, logos, or pathos to show convincing rhetorical arguments by showing an appeal to authority (ethos), an appeal to emotions (pathos), or an appeal to logic (logos).

Furthermore, one can note that the bandwagon fallacy was used in one of the examples to show that a lot of people were using the product and other fallacies can also be used to try and convince the audience.
