The reason was Sparta was located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula. If you will explore a map of Greece, you will find that the southern part of Greece is attached by a small strip of land. This southern part is called the Peloponnesian Peninsula.
The helots were a group of people that constituted a majority of the population of Laconia and Messenia – the territories affecting Sparta.
