if john buys 20 apples on his way home he sees his friend ted and his friend ted asks for some apples so john gives him a handful of apples. then he runs into two surfers that are exhausted from surfing and gives each of them an apple. almost home he runs into his friend Z thats in a hurry and gives her a handful of apples too. when he got home there were only two apples left and him and his son ate them. how many apples did john give away?

He gave away (the 20 he bought) minus (the 2 he still has) = 18 apples .

Notice that John is quite an incredibly impressive guy !
