When the urinary bladder is filled the smooth muscle stretch by activating stretch receptors in the bladder. This causes the internal urethral sphincter muscle to relax and allow urine to flow.
This stretch receptors also also sends message to brain to give stimuli to the external urethral sphincter that are voluntary in nature. This produces an urge to urinate and helps in excretion of this products from the urinary bladder.
