The migration period started around 1910 and lasted until the 1930s A second wave began after the great depression. The movement of 6 million African Americans out of the rural South and towards the urban North, Midwest, and West from 1916 to 1970. It was caused by the poor economic conditions along with the racial segregation and discrimination in the Southern states.
A major reason for this migration was because of segregation in the South which was rampant because of Jim Crow Laws which prevented them from living as free citizens.
