What are your thoughts on the way the supreme court has attempted to define what constitutes a ""serious offense"" vs a ""petty crime""? should there be a more concrete definition?

A petty crime is a minor infraction of the law. For example, driving without following traffic rules, selling on stalls without permission etc. is an offense

Petty crimes have been defined under Section 2(45) to mean offences for which the maximum punishment provided under any law including the IPC, is imprisonment up to 3 years

Serious offences' include those offences for which punishment under any law is imprisonment between 3 to 7 years. It include assault, robbery, murder, burglary etc.

On the basis of impact and circumstances the act of offense has been done, above the classification of the offence whether it comes under petty crime or serious offence, it could  be better decided for the punishment at the discretion of judiciary to decide the type and quantum of the punishment.
