As a side effect of cancer treatment, tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a collection of metabolic disorders that can happen when a lot of cancer cells are killed off (lysed), spilling their contents into the circulation. After the therapy of lymphomas and leukemias, and in particular after the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukaemia, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, this happens most often. Patients at higher risk for TLS should be constantly watched while taking chemotherapy and should get all required therapies and preventative measures in order to avoid this potentially deadly complication. Although less often, TLS can also develop on its own (without being treated with chemotherapy).
