Being a very dynamic and complex system with many interconnected parts, the nervous system displays many self-organizational traits. We will discuss three different types of brain self-organization in this chapter: self-organization that occurs throughout development, self-organization that results from experience, and self-organization that results from damage. Self-organization has an impact on the development of the nervous system. This is an extremely important question in our understanding since it is difficult to understand how the nervous system, which is highly structured and complex, can evolve from a single fertilized egg.
