The Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, the 1973 judgment that legalized abortion statewide, in a ruling that closely followed the ideological lines of the justices. Chief Justice John Roberts disagreed.
Roberts remarked in his 12-page decision in the Dobbs case that while he agreed with upholding Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban, he disagreed with overturning Roe and Casey.
"Regardless of how those circumstances are viewed, the Court's decision to reverse Roe and Casey is a tremendous shock to the legal system," he added.
"A narrower ruling rejecting the erroneous viability line would be significantly less distressing, and no more action is necessary to resolve this issue."
John Glover Roberts Jr. is an American lawyer and judge who has served as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States since 2005. Roberts has written the majority decision in a number of notable cases.
