How did the gift exchange happen?

  • Jim sold the gold watch to buy a set of combs for Della.

Jim and Della are a very poor couple, but they love each other very much and are always willing to indulge and make each other happy.

Jim has a gold watch that he likes a lot and Della is attached to her long hair. However, she knows that Jim will be happy to have a watch chain, so she sells her hair to buy him a gold chain.

However, when she gets home she realizes that Jim sold the watch to buy a set of fancy combs that Della wanted.

The narrator shows how each of them sacrificed themselves to make the other happy, as they feel gifted if the person they love is well and content and because of this, the narrator considers that they were wise in their gifts.
