The causes of substance abuse could include poverty,depression,lonliness  or the pressure to be socially accepted by peers.

The consequences of substance abuse could be various health diseases such as hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS upon sharing of needles or using dirty needles during drug abuse. Liver cancer and liver erosion upon alcoholism. The consequences may even be poverty due to spending of money on these substances.

Substance abuse can be prevented by raising sin tax making alcohol and tobacco more expensive and luxurious therefore it reduces purchases and risk of abuse. Teach teenagers about the dangers of substance abuse and the consequences of participating to discourage experimentation.
