For Lincoln, the assignment became always to preserve the Union. In his first inaugural address, Lincoln said, “continue to execute all of the express provisions of our countrywide constitution, and the Union will bear for all time, it being not possible to smash it besides by way of a few action not supplied for within the instrument itself.”
