first  given condition

x-6 = 3y

i.e. x= 3y + 6  eqn 1

second given condition

x+ y = 38

i.e. x= 38-y  eqn 2

solving eqn 1 and 2

3y + 6 = 38-y

3y + y = 38-6

4y = 32

y = 8

substituting the value of y in eqn 2

x = 38 - y

x= 38-8

x= 30

hence the required numbers are 8 and 30
