You should have already read the Nacirema article: Body Ritual among the Nacirema (above in module).
Think about, and then answer the following questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS - do not just repeat what the article says:
1. What is "Nacirema" spelled backwards? Where are they actually located on a map? Who are they, really?
2. Why do the customs of the Nacirema seem so bizarre when they are written about in an anthropological style?
3. Having read the article, do you view American culture any differently than you did before? If so, why?
4. Has this article helped you to view other cultures differently? If so, how?
5. If this article has distorted the picture of American culture, how difficult is it for all of us, anthropologist included, to render objective descriptions of other
cultures?
Write the questions as well as your answers here in the text box or in a Word .doc and submit. No late submissions for this assignment are allowed.

Sagot :

1) Backward-spelled nacirema is American. They are located in North America between the United States and Mexico. Actually, they are Americans.

2) Nacirema appear strange because they are written strangely and we are unable to identify them. In addition, it seems strange because it is written in an exaggerated but accurate manner. For instance, when it discussed our mouth and teeth. Americans are preoccupied with having white, straight teeth, but we would never attribute that to a "supernatural influence." We do not believe that we would lose our loved ones or friends, but we could believe that it would make it more difficult for us to meet new people.

3) The way I view American culture is not actually that different. The section that talked about receiving medical treatment in places where people must pay gifts to enter and depart did make me reflect on how absurd the way we provide medical care in America is, especially given how expensive it is.

4) I believe that this post serves as a warning to people who would criticize the culture of another person. Additionally, I think it demonstrates the necessity for caution and fairness while characterizing the culture of another individual. However, I believe that some rituals are known to have the opposite impact from what people believe they should, thus I still believe that people can fairly judge other civilizations.

5) It is definitely quite challenging to render objective descriptions of other cultures. Particularly considering how people often disagree or make fun of ideas that don't make sense to them. As a result, it's critical to make an effort to comprehend the underlying logic and to avoid making assumptions about one's level of knowledge or the right response.
