Who were slaves?
It is crucial to keep in mind that while some slaves worked on sizable cotton farms, others engaged in other forms of agriculture, such as tobacco, corn, hemp (used to make rope), and animals. In Southern cities, a large number of individuals had jobs in a variety of skilled trades as well as as common laborers.
Slaves were treated as prized possessions simply because they were black. To keep them as property, violence—either actual or threatened—was used. People of both races coexisted within these boundaries, and they engaged in a variety of interactions.
