how did american writers help americans better understand the changes they faced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

Sagot :

After the American Revolution and more so after the War of 1812, American authors were urged to create truly indigenous literature. Four eminent authors suddenly manifested themselves as if in response. A significant half-century of literary advancement was started by William Cullen Bryant, Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Bryant, a native of New England, gained notoriety when the first edition of his poem "Thanatopsis" (1817) was published in his 23rd year. This poem, as well as a few others written afterwards, were inspired by English authors of the 18th century. However, he didn't write nature poems that accurately captured the New England setting until much later, when he was influenced by Wordsworth and other Romantics of American authors.

The Salmagundi papers (1807–1808), which mocked Manhattan's populace, were published by Irving, the youngest son of a wealthy merchant family, along with other exuberant young men. The American authors "Diedrich Knickerbocker" then proceeded to write A History of New York (1809), a burlesque history that made fun of petty scholarship and targeted the ancient Dutch families. Clearly, Irving took his cues from the Neoclassical English satirists from whom he had learnt to write in a polished, breezy manner for these pieces. He later injected a fresh Romantic tone in The Sketch Book, Bracebridge Hall (1822), and other works after meeting Sir Walter Scott and learning about innovative German literature. He was the first American author to earn the unwavering esteem of British reviewers (albeit they were a little astonished).
