The aquaporins are channel proteins that form cylindrical shape, being embedded across the whole membrane. Since the protein crosses the entire membrane, it must have hydrophilic polar amino acids at the top and bottom whereas, the integral part of the channel must have hydrophobic amino acids on the outer side and hydrophilic amino acids on the inner channel side.

Aquaporins are the channel proteins that mediate the transport of water molecules across the membrane from its region of higher concentration to the region of lower water concentration, i.e. passive transport. They can also transport some very small solute particles.
