The largest kingdom the area has ever known was created by the Assyrian rulers between the ninth and seventh century BC. From Egypt, the eastern Mediterranean coast, and sections of Anatolia (Turkey) in the west to the Iranian mountains in the east, its soldiers occupied territory. The actual Assyrian heartland was located in Mesopotamia, in what is now northern Iraq, along the Tigris River. The city of Ashur, which has gone by this name at least since the middle of the third millennium BC, served as its first capital. The Assyrian Empire's capital was first located in Kalhu (Nimrud), then Dur-Sharrukin (Khorsabad), and last Nineveh—the most impressive metropolis of them.
