Account based on oral sources
Muhammad led a group of about 300 men to Badr. There, they met about 1,000 Meccans who were much better equipped. Muhammad told his men to wait for his order. As the Meccans approached, a sandstorm struck and weakened their attack. Muhammad's men advanced, and they were able to defeat the Meccans.
Account from the Quran
Allah gave you victory in the battle of Badr, where your forces were much weaker than those of the enemy. . . . remember when you said to the believers, "Is it not enough that your Lord is helping you with a force of three thousand angels sent (from the heavens)?"
