why are the fundamental frequency and the overtone frequencies also called resonance frequencies? because you can add them together, making a new waveform. because they occur in multiples of the frequency being sounded. the overtones match the higher frequencies of the fundamental. the string (or air column) vibrates naturally at all these frequencies, therefore the string (or air column) can experience large-amplitude vibrations when driven at any of these frequencies.
