Orpheus joined the Argonauts' expedition and played his own, more potent music to protect them from the Sirens' music. He married Eurydice when he got back, but she died from a snakebite not long after. Orpheus, overcome with grief, ventured into the realm of the dead in an effort to revive Eurydice. He won over the River Styx's canine guardian Cerberus and ferryman Charon with his singing and playing. Orpheus was granted permission to take Eurydice back to the world of life and light because the underworld's ruler Hades was moved by his music and grief. However, Hades imposed one restriction: neither Orpheus nor Eurydice were permitted to turn around after leaving the realm of death.
