(5 points)

3. Read the information on New York Times v. United States (1971). Be sure to select "Read More" to learn more. In this decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment protected the right of the New York Times to publish classified, or secret, government papers about the war in Vietnam. This information revealed that the government had not been truthful with the public about the level of U.S. involvement in the war. Describe in your own words how this ruling shows the importance of the protection for freedom of the press in the First Amendment. (5 points)

4. Read the information on Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier (1988). Be sure to select "Read More" to learn more. In Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, the Supreme Court ruled that school censorship of student newspaper articles did not violate the First Amendment rights of students. Censorship is the practice of not allowing certain material to be published if leaders object to it. The Court reasoned that this is because school newspapers are part of the education that schools provide, not an open place for the exchange of ideas. Explain your opinion about this reasoning, including whether you think student newspapers should be considered protected under the First Amendment. (5 points)
