After several days of minor earthquakes, Mount St. Helens erupted on October 1 with a plume of steam and volcanic ash nearly two miles high. Ash and steam continued to spew over the next few days, and magma finally reached the surface on October 11. The gradual release of magma continued until 2008, building a new dome in place of the one destroyed by the 1980 eruption.
