The Great Depression reinforced the idea that for Japan to be successful, a strong military was necessary. The growth of Japanese nationalism and militarism was encouraged by the gaining of land as well as frustration of surrendering land to the West.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the notion that expansion through military conquest would solve Japan’s economic problems gained currency. It was argued that the rapid growth of Japan’s population necessitated large food imports. The country had to be able to export to sustain such imports. While anti-Japanese racism and discriminatory legislation in many countries served as barriers to emigration, exports were limited by Western tariffs. Japanese and Chinese efforts to secure racial equality in the League of Nations covenant had been rejected by Western statesmen. It was argued that Japan had no recourse but to use force.
