The 1964 voter registration drive in Mississippi, in which hundreds of white college students from the north participated, was known as Freedom Summer.

The Mississippi Summer Project, was a voter registration drive in 1964 with the goal of increasing the number of Black voters in Mississippi. African Americans in Mississippi joined over 700 volunteers, the most of whom were white, in the fight against harassment and discrimination at the polls. Since the turn of the century, Blacks had been unable to vote due to restrictions on voter registration and other laws. In order to assist the local Black people, the project also established dozens of Freedom Schools, Freedom Houses, and community centres throughout tiny communities in Mississippi.
