He was born in Carlisle, then educated at Destone College in Staffordshire and Brasenose College in Oxford. For over twenty years John taught English at various Oxford shire comprehensive schools, as well as writing poetry for children. He analyzed the poem "gathering storm". The poem refers to how one can count the timing of the lightning which actually tells one how far the person is from the center of the storm. The poem has five stanzas with no rhyme scheme. The stanzas doesn't seem to have the same number of lines. The poem tend to talk about the experience of someone in the storm.
