Probable Solutions for the Case Study
Using the information in the case study above, the additional resources, and what you have learned from the Research and Composition course, which option
would you choose from the choices below?
Option A: Simply Explain
They should simply explain what is discriminatory about the current dress code. The school board's only argument is. "This is the way we've always done it."
It is almost entirely based on size and gender. Once they point out these things, the board will see it from the students' perspective
Option B: Better Code Adoption
They should find schools with more progressive policies and bring their ideas to the board. Argue that their school board doesn't want to be left behind" in a
growing trend toward gender neutral dress codes. They will probably want to adopt a code more like the rest of the schools in the area
Option C: The Legal Way
They should contact the ACLU to see if they would send a representative to come and talk to the board about the legality of their discriminatory standards
They could get it on the board agenda, contact local media, and publicize it. The board will likely cave under the pressure.
Option D: Show Me the Facts
They need facts! They should survey the student body to see how many agree with the current dress code, and how many would support a dress code that
addressed all of the students in a more equitable way. They could use this information to persuade the board.
