I may have misunderstood your correspondent Mr Nolan, but it seems that he does not like cyclists. Indeed, whilst he remarks at length about the numbers who ride on the pavement, has he ever considered that they only do so in order to avoid simply being squished by HGVs? As more reasonable readers are no doubt aware, cars and lorries are supposed to avoid cycle lanes. The trouble, however, is that drivers frequently don't keep out of them. Somewhat ironically, I know this from both first- and second-hand experience, as I am in fact a surgeon who treats injured riders as well as a cyclist myself who was knocked over as recently as last week. Whilst it is an accepted fact that bikes are currently banned from pavements, as a nation it is high time we realized that the roads are simply too dangerous for most riders. Lives depend on us taking action to get cyclists out of harm's way, and there is no time to lose. Consequently, what we desperately need is a campaign to segregate pavements into pedestrian and cyclist sections. To that end, I request that all riders who feel similarly vote with their mice and keyboards and join me in signing an online petition available at www.petitions.org.au/cycling.
