Soon after independence was proclaimed, each of the 13 states drafted a constitution at the suggestion of the Continental Congress.

  • The Declaration outlined the reasons why the colonies wanted to become independent. When the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain, they were able to establish an official alliance with the French government and win French backing for their war against the British.
  • The thirteen colonies were aware that they required some kind of formal authority to bring them all together. They want written regulations that were accepted by all the states.
