Sagot :

In the 1950s, an African-American family named the Youngers lived on Chicago's South Side.

The Youngers will get a cheque worth $10,000 when the play begins. This money is derived from the late Mr. Younger's life insurance policy. Each and every adult member of the family has an idea for what the person would wish to accomplish with this money. Mama, the family matriarch, must buy a home in order to fulfill a vision she had with her better half. Walter Lee, Mom's son, would rather use the money to invest with his friends in a business.

He acknowledges that the investment will provide for the family's financial needs forever. Ruth, Walter's fiancé, agrees with Mama but is certain that she and Walter can offer their son Travis more room and freedom. Finally, Beneatha, Walter's sister and Mama's little daughter, has to use the money to pay for her clinical school tuition. She also wishes that her family members were less eager to immigrate to the West. Beneatha makes an effort to understand who she is by reflecting on the past and Africa.
