Auguste Rodin was memorializing the self-sacrifice of six townsmen of 14th-century calais in the burghers of calais.
Rodin was hired by the French city of Calais in 1885 to produce a sculpture honoring notable Calais resident Eustache de Saint-bravery Pierre's through the terrible Hundred Years' War between England and France (begun in 1337).
Froissart claims that King Edward III struck a deal with the people of Calais in which they agreed that if they wanted to save their lives and their beloved city, they would also had to give up six notable members of the city council. Eustache de Saint-Pierre, the group's leader, was shown by Rodin in the middle of the crowd with a bent head and a beard.
Rodin took chances and worked in his own, albeit unique, way to produce his works of art. Rodin thus established a benchmark for painters who followed him, and Burghers of Calais became one of his most well-known and extensively researched paintings.
