In the 1950s, scientists were racing to discover the structure of DNA. DNA is a molecule in the body that acts as a
blueprint for its organs and traits. Chemist Rosalind Franklin came up with a way of photographing DNA through
x-ray technology. But many scientists of the time had little regard for women. James Watson and Francis Crick,
rival scientists, obtained Franklin's images without her knowledge or permission. Elaborating on her innovative
work, Watson and Crick published several scientific articles and won considerable acclaim. Franklin was not
recognized for her pivotal role for many years. And yet the two men earned a Nobel Prize in 1962.
