On April 6, 1917, the United States formally entered the war.In the meantime, some Americans took up arms in Europe. A number of Americans joined the French Foreign Legion beginning in the early stages of the conflict. Other Americans enlisted with the Lafayette Escadrille, a unit of the French Air Service, or drove ambulances for the American Field Service among them was the poet Alan Seeger, whose poem "I Have a Rendezvous with Death" subsequently became a favorite of President John F. Kennedy.
