Social structures in society can work to provide an ordering of society from things as diverse as institutions like courts and police forces to schools etc. However, depending on the rigidity of social structures certain groups can also be oppressed or left out of the governing decisions within a society. 

The positive means that you are high. If you are high you get more benefits and luxuries.The negative is that the low people of the caste they do not get luxuries.  The lower people in the caste may be treated unfairly by the people in the higher caste.
