A is volcanoes. They are formed by molten rock emerging through cracks or weaker areas in the crust of the Earth, the molten rock then cools into solid rock. This happens several times and the volcano gradually builds up in many layers, sometimes (like in the photo) this is enough for the volcano to break through the surface of the water e.g. Hawaiian Islands.
